Tamil Nadu: Order on SP Velumani's plea to quash two FIRs reserved | Chennai News
CHENNAI: The Madras high court has reserved its order on pleas moved by former local administration minister S P Velumani seeking to quash two FIRs registered against him for alleged irregularities in awarding tenders of Chennai and Coimbatore corporations.
A division bench of Justice P N Prakash and Justice R M T Teekaa Raman reserved their orders on Tuesday after concluding the final hearing in the PILs moved by anti-corruption NGO Arappor Iyakkam, DMK and quash petitions moved by Velumani.
Arappor Iyakkam and DMK alleged largescale corruption by the former minister in awarding tenders of the two corporations. While FIRs were registered against Velumani and his associates based on the complaints, the former minister moved the court seeking to quash the FIRs.
Opposing the same, the DVAC submitted that only the FIR filed by its special investigation cell in Chennai on August 9, 2021, was based upon complaints filed by Arappor Iyakkam and DMK in 2018.
"Other FIR was booked suo motu by the Coimbatore unit of the DVAC on March 14, 2022, on the basis of credible information collected by the agency," DVAC said.
Since only the FIR booked on the basis of complaints received from the NGO and the DMK leader were a subject matter of cases pending before the high court, Velumani could not seek to quash the other FIR, it added. The NGO contended that the allegations were fully supported by documents obtained under RTI Act and through public sources and submitted to the DVAC.
