RTI revealed Bombay gymkhana ran eating house without health licence for two years - Maharashtra
Mumbai : For over two years now, one of the clubs in Mumbai, Bombay Gymkhana has been running its eating house without a mandatory health licence.
This has been revealed by documents accessed through Right to Information ( RTI ). The one-year health licence of the eating house expired on December 23, 2019, and it has been operating in the absence of permission since then, revealed an inspection conducted by officials of the BMC from the Health Department of A-ward (Colaba Fort).
Sanjay Gurav , an activist filed an RTI application and brought the matter to light. Gurav filed the application on March 4 before BMC’s A-ward and sought information on the health licence of the Gymkhana to run the eating house. The BMC in its reply on March 29, shared a copy of the health licence, which stated that it expired in December 2019, stated a report in The Indian Express .
The BMC has maintained that no eating house should be allowed to operate a licence after several instances of fire accidents in restaurants in the past. But, the club was conducting business openly without having a licence for over two years, told Gurav. On March 19, after Gurav’s RTI, BMC’s Health Department prepared an Inspection Report and directed the gymkhana to renew the licence within seven days.
