Kerala government is hiding the real figures of Kovid deaths, open polls from local bodies' data

The Kerala government has not included at least 13 thousand deaths in the official figures of deaths due to corona. The government has hidden these deaths in the death figures recorded in the local bodies.

Between June 10 and 15, 26,768 Kovid deaths have been registered in the local bodies of Kerala, but according to the figures released by the Kerala government, the number of Kovid deaths in the state as of 4 July 2021 is 13,640. It is to be noted here that this figure could be bigger as the local bodies have released the figures only till June. It is said that the official figures of Kerala have not included the figures of at least 200 local bodies.

There are total 941 Gram Panchayats, 152 Blocks, 14 Zilla Panchayats, 87 Municipalities and 6 Corporations in Kerala. Malayala Manorama Newspaper had first published a report on this subject. According to the figures with the National Herald, 2,859 deaths have been registered in Thiruvananthapuram. But the data obtained from district panchayats etc. shows that the deaths due to Kovid are more than 4,200. The reply to an RTI application revealed that 3,172 deaths occurred between 1 and 31 May 2021 at the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram.

Similar malpractices have also come to the fore in Alappuzha district where 1,480 deaths have been recorded in the district hospital, but only 1017 deaths are recorded in the official figures. The most disturbing figures have been reported from Mallapuram and Kollan districts. According to district figures, 2,758 people have died in Mallapuram, while only 1049 deaths have been recorded in official records. Similarly, there have been 1709 deaths in Kollam district but only 922 deaths are mentioned in the official records. Similarly, in Ernakulam also the figures of local bodies show that a total of 2600 people died of corona but government figures show it as 1314. At the same time, 257 deaths were also reported in Palakkad district, but only 1191 deaths are recorded in the official figures. Such manipulation and manipulation of death figures will also have an impact on who is to be compensated and who is not.

It should be noted that the Supreme Court has directed the Central Government and the National Disaster Management Authority headed by the Prime Minister to pay compensation to the families of those who died of Kovid. The Supreme Court has also directed the state governments to provide accurate figures of deaths.
